Cosmetic Services To Help Increase Wellness Checks

ALABAMA -

If you need unwanted hair removed or saggy skin tightened up, you can do so at the Mobile County Health Department’s Aura Wellness Center. In between the multiple treatments, staff will also ask if you would care to get any number of wellness checks at the same time.

“There are a lot of people who don’t seek any healthcare until they’re sick. And we know statistically, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” says County Health Officer Dr. Bert Eichold.

Services are somewhat discounted than what you would normally see in a plastic surgeon’s office. And that’s on purpose.

“The population that tends to go to the health department for care isn’t going to be the population that’s going to go into the private community and spend considerably more for these services,” says President of the Board of Health Censors Dr. George Koulianos.

The laser for hair removal cost the department $70,850. No federal, state or taxpayer’s funds were used, it’s all self-supported. The question we pose is this: Is the health department right in entering the “beauty” business at such a cost to get people to start taking care of themselves?

According to the county, the Mobile County Health Department is completely autonomous, meaning they don’t have to get permission from the commission to make a purchase like this. Aura officials think the machine will pay for itself in time, meanwhile we asked women what they think.

“I actually take a lot of things from the health department so it’s actually pretty easy and more convenient that way,” says Cecelia Powe.

“I believe that they have the right intentions, I don’t know if it should be that much money spent on something that you don’t know if you’re for sure going to benefit from it or not,” says Bobbi McConaghy.

Services are performed by nurse practitioners. If it's successful, the health department plans to expand the center. You can visit their website at www.MCHD.org/Aura.
