Deputies in Escambia County, Florida, arrested a couple they say wrote checks on closed bank accounts to steal thousands in gold, jewelry and rare coins from local businesses.
Tia Smith and Michael Garay were arrested Thursday night in North Pensacola.
A News 5 viewer saw our report on the fraud investigation, recognized the couple and called deputies.
Smith and Garay are accused of writing the bad checks to steal valuables from local flea markets and antique stores then selling the merchandise to pawn shops.
Smith was charged with multiple counts of fraud and larceny.
Garay was booked on several worthless check charges.
The defense for Constable Larry Sheffield has until August 19 to request a preliminary hearing.
