UA President on Gun Policy

ALABAMA -

The University of Alabama in Huntsville became the scene of a killing spree on February 12th of 2010 when Amy Bishop shot and killed three fellow faculty members and tried to kill three others.

A new law in the state of Alabama allows 18 year olds to obtain concealed carry permits.  "Well we certainly are going to follow the state law, but our policy is that students that bring guns to campus need to check them with the University of Alabama Police and when they need them they can check them back out", said University President, Doctor Judy Bonner in an exclusive interview with WKRG News 5.

Dr. Bonner says she supports students who are hunters bringing their firearms on campus, but if they don't check in their guns, it is a violation of the school's code of conduct.  Violating the conduct code can lead to students being kicked out of school.

"We have a trained police department, and we have added police officers, and we are prepared for the worst", said Dr. Bonner. She also says the school participates in drills on a periodic basis to ensure campus safety. "Our highest priority is to keep our campus safe.  There is nothing more important to me than having a safe environment for our students", said Dr. Bonner.
