Road Work Finished One Day Into School Year

Storm clouds threatened to drop more rain on an already soaked Mobile this morning. Thankfully it moved through pretty quickly and Joey Bowden and his team kept right on working.

"We got going and we had a little rain start around ten and it's been showers on and off since then. We're going to try to get it done today, somehow or other we're going to finish!" said Bowden.

Last week, Bowden had told News 5 he was optimistic that the repaving of a lane on Springhill Avenue would be finished Friday, loads of time before school traffic would clog the roadways Monday morning. However Mother Nature had other plans, forcing them to tie up loose ends today--and slow traffic just a little.

Traffic was a little backed up before the light at McGregor but Bowden says he realizes the importance of this project  and no matter what, they're getting it done today.

"It really is, I don't want to tie up school traffic too many days and we have to go back to the interstate tomorrow night so I'm not going to be available to come do this."

Crews were finishing up the intersection at Springhill and McGregor around lunchtime Monday and about to start working on a turn lane near Ziegler that he said would take another hour.

Bowden said another reason they wanted to get done today is because that same crew is needed along I-10 in Tillman's Corner where they're paving a third lane on the highway. In total, there are 60 other roads in mobile that are on the docket, so they've got a busy few months ahead of them.
