Nine Republicans and two democrats have successfully announced they are running for Alabama's 1st Congressional District.

They are: former two-year college chancellor Bradley Byrne, businessman Daniel Dyas, state Rep. Chad Fincher, attorney Wells Griffith, columnist Quin Hillyer, businesswoman Jessica James, legal assistant Sharon Powe, retiree David "Thunder" Thornton and businessman Dean Young.

Qualifying on the Democratic side were Lula Albert-Kaigler and Burton LeFlore.

The primary election is Sept. 24.
