Child Strangled By Grandmother, Left In Road

Mobile, AL -

It started as a bizarre story.

"Originally got a call for, what was dispatched as suspicious circumstances because someone had knocked on a door saying someone was chasing her," says Cpl. Chris Levy with the Mobile Police Department.

But once officers arrived on the scene, it became tragic.

"A child, laying in the roadway, face down, and she had been severely injured."

A four-year-old girl, the granddaughter of Shirley Bowman. Officers say Bowman appeared to have been having a psychotic episode and strangled the little girl until she was no longer conscious. The girl was left in the 7800 block of Howells Ferry Road. She is now in critical condition.

"I can't imagine. Cause it ain't never happened to me. It's happened around me but it ain't never happened to me personally. It hurts my heart," says Belinda Novay, who lives in a neighborhood off Howells Ferry Road.

The incident happened around one in the morning on this busy road which sees cars zooming by at a high rate of speed, so it's amazing this little girl wasn't run over. And we've learned that this isn't the first incident to happen in this family. They also have a history of domestic abuse between the grandmother and the daughter.

"Maybe she'll get some help, maybe a psychiatrist. I know it's going to be tough on her, maybe she'll get some help," says Sam Manning, who also lives off Howells Ferry.

Bowman was arrested and initially charged with aggravated child abuse, but that has since been changed to attempted murder.
