Officers May have Violated Policy in Mayor Jones Campaign Ad

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, Alabama -

It looks like your run of the mill campaign ad, but a split second of video has stirred up a controversy.

The spot is on mayor Sam Jones' Facebook page and has run on TV. In it there is a cameo by two mobile police officers in uniform, which appears to be a violation of department policy.

The department's General Order 26 states "Members and employees are expressly prohibited from engaging in any political activity while in uniform or while using city vehicles or other property. Members or employees are specifically prohibited from appearing in any political commercial, brochure, or advertisement while in uniform or while otherwise displaying any item or article that identifies a person as an employee of the Mobile Police Department."

There are protections for political expression for employees at least while off duty.

"When off duty out of uniform and acting as a private citizen no law enforcement officer or firefighter shall be prohibited from engaging in city county or state political activities or denied the right from refraining from it," said Donald Dees, Director of the Mobile County Personnel Board.
