CANTONMENT, FLORIDA -

Is the pit bull getting a bad name, or are they vicious animals?

Out of a dozen veterinarians from Mobile to Pensacola only one would comment on camera to answer that question.

"I don't think the pitbull breed is to blame I think the blame is that we have these dogs that just get dumped and they really have to live for themselves and they're not acting in an unnatural behavior, they're pack hunting is what they're doing," said Chris Rehm with Rehm Animal Clinic.

Other vets politely declined an interview. Some said that over 50% of their clients own pit bulls and commenting wouldn't be good for business. But, a former shelter employee had this to say:

"Out of all the strays that we saw come in I would say a chihuahua was more aggressive," she said.

A pit bull attacked a woman in Irvington early Thursday evening after breaking free from it's collar. County officials tell News 5 she was attacked in the leg.

A pit bull also attacked 8 sheep early Wednesday morning in Cantonment, Florida. The owner of the property says his sheep were mauled to death by a pitbull.

"Had one of the sheep by the throat, there were 8 already down in the pasture I ran back inside got my shotgun. They had mauled several of them, 8 of them were dead I have several that have bites to the feet and through the throat that we're doctoring on but 8 were killed," he said.
