Making a Home Inventory for Hurricane Season

Posted: Updated:

How much are the things in your home worth? Many of us don't know.

Tropical Storm Dorian reminds us that tropical weather season shifting into high gear. We are entering the busiest time of the year for tropical storms and hurricanes. It may be time to update the list of valuables on your home insurance policy in case bad weather comes our way.

A lot of people don't realize how many personal items they really have until there's a loss. When that happens, there's just no way to remember all of your items. Anthony Stutts, a Mobile insurance agent, says, "At least annually go in and kind of do an update to your inventory because we're creatures of habit, we're consumers by nature, so we're buying stuff all of the time."

But modern technology is making it easier than ever to keep track of items. Keeping track of serial numbers can be a cinch if you have a smart phone. Just take a picture. Often these photo records can be uploaded to your insurance carrier's web site.

For expensive items like TVs and other home electronics you'll just want to take a picture of those to document your purchase. Usually, those are covered my most home insurance policies but you still want that extra protection. Anthony says it's most important to document items of exceptional value, like a high-end television set.

"My opinion would be that anything that is 500-dollars or more you need to speak to your agent about it to see if it need to be endorsed onto the policy separately."

Insurers tell us when making your home inventory you should be sure to include the contents of drawers, closets, and cabinets. The value of little things can add up quickly. Some policies also include coverage for additional living expenses if your home is damaged by tropical weather. If you have any questions about what's covered by your policy, you can call your agent...before the peak of hurricane season - and its risks - close in.
