Rain Keeps Boats Close To Shore

Rain Keeps Boats Close To Shore

Dauphin Island, Alabama -

It's the 80th year for the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, but for some it's their first.

"I saw a shark earlier and that was the first time I'd seen an alive
shark so it was pretty cool seeing it," said a visitor.

Early afternoon was slow all thanks to some rough weather.

"A lot of them that come in are dodging storms. They'll get into a real
heavy chop for an hour or two and then get out of it to avoid the
lightning. Today has been a lot better, though," said Dr. Bob Shipp.

But, by mid-afternoon the storms cleared and the catches started coming in.

"We've had a lot of fish come in a lot of mackerel. Today we've seen
our first off-shore fish coming in, we've seen quiet a few yellowfin
tuna and dolphin, we saw very few of those yesterday what we haven't
seen a lot of are the inshore species," said Shipp.

This year over 3,000 anglers are participating in the world's largest fishing tournament. That number is up from last year.

"Last year we were down a little bit and we contribute that to red
snapper, but this year we've introduced several new things with the
lack of red snapper category that was very popular. We've done a lot
more with the inshore with the speckled trout and offshore with the
cash prize division," said Gene Fox.

This year there are 30 categories for fishermen. Final weigh in on Saturday will be at 7 p.m.

On Sunday gates open at 10 a.m. with the final weigh in at 5 p.m.
