Standing Water Causing Problems In Baldwin

Standing Water Causing Problems In Baldwin

BALDWIN COUNTY, ALABAMA -

Rushing water in Baldwin County was a problem Thursday in Fairhope, but county officials say we're not out of the woods just yet.

That's because of standing water. Even though the rain may be gone, standing water can found in ditches and on your property. Officials are worried that if it doesn't go away over the next 5 days we could be dealing with a mosquito outbreak.

"It does take 5 to 7 days in the summer for a mosquito to develop into an adult so if the water goes down in 3 or 4 days then it shouldn't be too much of a problem, but if it does stick around for the full 7 days then there could possibly be a hatch-off of adult mosquitos," said Rachel Beck with Baldwin County Mosquito Control.

If that hatch-off does happen, much of south Baldwin County will feel the effects. It's basically one giant breeding ground right now and that's not a good thing.

"Here in Alabama we have Eastern Equine Encephalitis that's popular to the area as well as West Nile Virus," said Beck.

It's not just us humans that are at rish but also our pets. With this much water everyone's a target.

"We definitely have dog heartworm that mosquitos carry in this area so the best thing for that is to keep your dog on a heartworm prevention," said Beck.

Mosquito control responded to several calls Friday and right now their goal is to hit the streets in hopes of preventing any sort of outbreak.

"Some of them are already seeing some adult mosquitos probably from recent rains and we're out checking that water to see if there's already larvae development and treating it with larvacide to prevent those larvae mosquitos from becoming adults," said Beck.
