An Air Force QF-4 drone was remotely destroyed this morning over the Gulf of Mexico.

The drone, which is a modified F-4 Phantom, was assigned to the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group at Tyndall Air Force Base in the Florida panhandle.

According to the Air Force, the drone was destroyed for "safety considerations" during it's return to base following routine training.

The Air Force did not provide details on what went wrong.

They "did" say that a temporary closure of Highway 98 today was not in response to this incident.

The QF-4 drones are used as targets to provide evaluation of air-to-air weapons systems at Tyndall.
