Many Miss. Public Buildings Ban Open Carry of Guns

Posted: Updated:
MISSISSIPPI -

Even if Mississippi's open-carry gun law takes effect, people still won't be allowed to take firearms into many government buildings.

State agencies have the power to write administrative rules for the properties they oversee.

Weapons are forbidden in the state Capitol, except for law enforcement officers.

The Department of Finance and Administration is banning openly carried firearms in state offices, including the justice building and the secretary of state's office in Jackson and the Department of Marine Resources headquarters in Biloxi.

The Department of Public Safety says only law-enforcement officers can carry firearms in driver's license offices or Highway Patrol stations.

The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks bans the open carry of firearms in state parks, but allows people to carry concealed weapons if they have a state-issued permit.
