Watermelon Tradition Continues in Grand Bay

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, Alabama -

Before the fireworks an Independence Day tradition continued in Grand Bay. For 40 years the city has hosted an annual watermelon festival.

Several thousand people came out Thursday, eating up more than 300 watermelons.

Locals will tell you that Grand Bay produces the best watermelons anywhere, bar none.

"Well the Grand Bay watermelon is supposed to be the best you can eat, the soil in this area turns out a better watermelon," said organizer Randall Fletcher.

The festival is put on every year as a fundraiser to help support the local Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
