Fla. Sees Large Drop in Money for Police Training

Posted: Updated:
TALLAHASSEE, FL -

There will be substantially less money available for law enforcement training over the next year, in part because crime has dropped in Florida and officers statewide are writing fewer traffic tickets.

A trust fund used to pay for officer training is built through court fees and a portion of traffic tickets.

But crime has dropped steadily and the number of tickets issued to drivers has dropped by hundreds of thousands after the Legislature raised fines.

And now the fund that once provided $110 in training money for every law enforcement officer in the state is now down to $40 per officer, meaning fewer classes will be available at regional training academies.
