Mobile Pastor Preaches About Son's Cancer

Posted: Updated:

Dauphin Way Baptist Church pastor, Dr. Adam Dooley, is expected to be a strong spiritual leader for one of Mobile's largest churches, but for the last two years, when he talks about his five year old son, Carson, he gets emotional. Carson was diagnosed with leukemia at two years old, and has since received chemotherapy just about every week at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis. He says, "We wrestled with all the questions that all people wrestle with. Why would God let this happen to us? We had anger even. We were serving God. How could this happen? He does not promise a life of ease to anyone."

Dr. Dooley and his wife, Heather, have relied on their community and their faith to get through Carson's treatments. They are inspired by their little boy. Heather says, "In a lot of ways, he has become my hero through all of this. He has been so positive through it all. Even if he doesn't feel good, he just goes on."

Dr. Dooley has shared Carson's story from the pulpit, because their family has learned so much, through their suffering. He says,  "I did a whole sermon series when I came back. God has given us strength that I can't even put into words."

Carson is now in remission, and he should complete his last chemotherapy treatment in February. According to Dr. Dooley, St. Jude has a 94 percent success rate in treating children with Carson's type of leukemia (ALL).
