SEMMES, ALABAMA -

Authorities are describing it as a gruesome scene.

"They dead, they both dead," said a neighbor.

Steve and Erica Lankford were both found dead inside their home in Semmes late Friday night.

"It's a great loss, great loss, they were good people. Steve was a good man, a hardworking man whatever he could do he would do it," said a neighbor.

It's a tragedy shocking the entire community. Authorities say this was no accident. They believe someone killed the couple then set the home on fire to destroy any evidence left behind.

"It was dark and still a little smoky and it was very apparent that a homicide had occurred," said Lt. Paul Burch with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

One neighbor tells News 5 she saw a white trucj pull into the driveway just after 9 p.m. She says the driver and Steve went through the back gate, into the backyard. A few moments later she heard four gunshots and saw the truck pull away.

So far detectives won't confirm.

The scene was chaotic early Saturday morning as the investigation continued. Neighbors rushed outside in disbelief.

"They kept to themselves, never any issues with me and my family or anyone here that I know of," said a neighbor.

"All of us are going to miss them they were good people, good outstanding citizens. He kept his yard up, good hardworking man and Erica was a good lady," said a neighbor.
