When Doctor Regina Benjamin became the 18th Surgeon General of The United States it was a dream come true.   "This is a doctor's dream job, but for me it was more important and more personal..because many of my family members are not sitting here today because of preventable diseases", said Dr Benjamin when she was sworn in January 11, 2010.

As the country's top doctor, her focus has been wellness and disease prevention.  She's proud of what she's accomplished serving on The President's Cabinet but says, it's time for a change.
"Oh, it's been four years.   It's a long time to be a way from home..and it's been a good, three...four years and it's also been a wonderful opportunity.  But, I'm ready to make a difference and take on other challenges", Benjamin told News 5 Wednesday night in a telephone interview.

"The thing I'm gonna do right now is take a couple of weeks and rest and enjoy the summer a little bit and come home for Fourth of July and then kind of look at whatever challenges are out there and really make a difference", said Dr. Benjamin.  "Most importantly I'm gonna come back and volunteer at the clinic in Bayou La Batre and re-connect with a lot of my patients".

Dr. Benjamin says President Obama was surprised when she told him her plans to resign from her position.  She said he was sad, but supportive.
