Community Center Targeted By Copper Thieves

TOULMINVILLE, ALABAMA -
The air conditiong unit at Figures Community Center in Toulminville was targeted 3 times in recent months, forcing the center to close it's doors.

"What they call the evaporator cooling coils, they chopped the ends off of them, they didn't remove the coils they just chopped the ends off of them," said superintendent Richard Safin.

Mobile Police are reviewing surveillance video hoping one of the 16 cameras may have captured the vandals.

For now the basketball courts will stay empty, forcing teens in the area to find a new hangout.

"It means we're not going to do anything, we're just going to stay at home and watch tv," said a teenager.

Emergency funds from the City of Mobile will ultimately be used to make the repairs, but luckily the work is already starting, at least putting a temporary fix on the problem.

"It's a loss because we've designed so many programs for our young people as well as our adults and if they don't get to take part in this then it's a loss to the community," said Sherryll White, Director of Parks and Recreation.

The center plans to open with temporary AC units by Tuesday.
