FOLEY, Alabama -

If you're headed to Gulf Shores or Orange Beach this holiday weekend, pack sunscreen, water and other beach essentials...but more importantly...pack a little patience.

Expect major traffic delays on Highway 59 from Loxley to Gulf Shores as tens of thousands of people head to the beach.

A drive from Interstate 10 in Loxley to Gulf Shores usually takes about 45 minutes or less...but the 32-mile drive could take you as long as 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the time of travel.

The Alabama Dept. of Transportation has placed traffic counters and sensors along Highway 59.

ALDOT says more than 43-thousand drivers will use Hwy 59 today. On a typical day, about 32-thousand drivers use the highway.
