HOUSTON CO., Ala. -

A mysterious respiratory illness has infected at least seven people in Southeast Alabama.

Two people died over the weekend from the illness.

Health officials are still trying to figure out what is causing people to get sick, but say the victims are mostly young adults, and one elderly person.

They say it is similar to flu-like symptoms with coughing, fever, and shortness of breath.

Local hospitals are requiring staff to wear special masks to reduce the risk of infection.

Laboratory samples have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control, and could be available as early as Thursday.

The Mobile County Health Department would not comment on the issue.
