USF studies promise breast cancer breakthrough

USF studies promise breast cancer breakthrough

Posted: Updated:

As the news of Angelina Jolie brings awareness to the fight against breast cancer there is a major medical breakthrough thanks to a nationwide study with the largest number of participants at the University of South Florida's Breast Health.

The study on Cryoablation procedure is showing great promise by using the FDA cleared The Visica Treatment System.

"Once that tumor is frozen that tumor is killed - it's done it's kill it's dead," said Dr. Charles Cox, who is heading up the clinical trial at USF's Breast Health.

Dr. Cox explained how the extreme tip of the needle is used to freeze early stage breast cancer tumors.

"The needle is so concentrated, it doesn't damage healthy tissue surrounding the tumor," Dr. Cox said.

Patients are awake, and physicians only use local anesthesia to numb the area where the tumor is located, and Dr. Cox says the procedure is painless.

Dr. Cox describes this clinical trial as extremely promising, but doctors nationwide participating have noticed an exciting medical phenomena after the tumor is frozen. When the body naturally expels the dead material, researchers are noticing that patients are developing naturally produced antibodies.

"This could eventually lead to a vaccine that would be used to fight the future spread of cancer," Dr. Cox said.

Dr. Cox says only one or two more patients need to be treated and what he predicts as breakthrough results will be released to the public.
