Powerball A Powerful Draw For Alabamians

Powerball A Powerful Draw For Alabamians

Posted: Updated:

There's silliness in the air around the mildly serious business of buying lottery tickets.  The odds against you winning are so high they're almost equal to not playing at all--but who cares right?

"If you don't you don't have an opportunity to win, so 50-50 the way I look at it," says Wayne Carter from Pensacola.  It's always fun to have a fantasy about what you'd do with the money if you won.  To my surprise the most common response I got was from people who said they'd give their winnings away.

"Yeah, if you could give away $360 million wouldn't that be fun," says Gary from Elberta.  Alabama license plates were the most common in the parking lot.  Many players feel like Alabama's losing out by not having any sort of state sanctioned lottery--it's hard to say who's going to win the jackpot, but the biggest winner is the store.

"We've had this business ever since the lottery started we were one of their original lottery retailers when they first started," says the owner of Bob's Superette Helen Merchant.
