BRIGHTON, Ala. -

(AP) - Police say a 4-year-old Alabama boy remains hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot in the head while playing in a bedroom with a cousin the same age.

Brighton police Lt. Ray Hubbart said Saturday investigators believe the shooting was an accident but they're still trying to piece together what happened. Hubbart says it's unclear if the boy shot himself or was shot by his playmate, a 4-year-old girl identified by relatives was the boy's cousin.

The shooting happened Friday afternoon at a home in Brighton near Birmingham. Hubbart says two adults were in another room watching television or playing videogames.

The boy was shot with a .38-special handgun. Police have not identified the boy or his family, citing an ongoing investigation.
