DAPHNE, Alabama -

What you're looking at is a broken windshield to the 18-wheeler driven by Patrice Check. The truck slammed off the I-10 Bayway Thursday morning into Mobile Bay.

Thanks to what passerby Eric Pate did with a rock he found, the only casualty in this crash was the truck.

"I went down the side and jumped in the water and got a big rock and started hitting on the window and I could see that she could see me," said Pate.

By that time two other drivers stopped at the scene and helped Pate rescue the woman.

"She was conscious and talking to me which was really good so I asked her her name just to try and calm her down, but it looked like she was struggling a little bit," he continued.

The men were able to pull her through the windshield out of the water with gators just feet away.

"She had the death grip on my hand, but I think from the time we got her out she didn't let go of my hand until we got her up here and I asked her what day it was and she said Thursday and I asked her again her name and she told me," said Pate.

Then came the task of getting the big rig out of the water. Crews used orange booms to secure any fuel leaking from the truck. A large cran lifted the heavy truck from the bay.

Nearly 7 hours later the truck was upright and pulled from the scene.

"I think that God puts you in place for certain reasons and I happened to be in the right place at the right time today and I'm glad that this turned out to be a good story and not a bad one and today there is somebody that we were able to help and I feel really good about that," he said.
