Mobile's Jason Caffey Weighs in on NBA Player Coming Out of Closet

Posted: Updated:
Mobile, AL -

Jason Collins is a well respected veteran player for the NBA and in Sports Illustrated, he revealed even more about himself saying, "I am a 34 year old NBA center..I'm black, and I'm gay".

"The young man had to have a lot of courage to step up and admit he was gay being in a profession with all men", said former NBA player Jason Caffey of Mobile. Caffey was a teammate with Michael Jordan on the 1997 championship team.  He's proud of Collins for taking such a step, though he admits it would be awkward to be on his team.
"First of all I would embrace him as a friend because I'm not homophobic.  I have homosexuals that are friends mine, associates of mine, friends.  They don't approach me with that because I don't play like that, but, I would be skeptical about changing clothes around him, showering around him.  It would kind of make me uncomfortable", said Caffey.

NBA Commissioner David Stern issued a statement calling Collins a widely respected player,
"….We are proud he as assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue".

The Sports Illustrated article quotes Collins,   "If I had my way, someone else would have already done this.  Nobody has, which is why I am raising my hand".

Caffey says he's proud of Collins though he fears the move could hurt his career.  Last season he was on the Washington Wizards but, he's a free agent for next year.
"He has a contract year coming up and regardless of how good a player he is and how this is America and we have the right to be what we wanna be there are gonna be owners out there that are gonna look at him   and be like  ok is he gonna   cause friction on my team if  if I bring him on my team. So that could be his demise.  I don't know.
