Fire Out, HazMat Crews Checking Scene

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, Alabama -

Mobile Fire Rescue Department HazMat teams are preparing to check out the two fuel barges that burned overnight in the Mobile River. Once the Hazmat crews give an "all clear", a fire investigator will move in and try to determine what caused the initial explosion that was felt 30 miles away.

The first explosion happened around 8:30pm Wednesday night. Three workers cleaning the barges were injured. Bob Lowery, with the University of South Alabama Medical Center, reported at 10:30pm that all three patients were in critical condition. No other details were given.

Explosions continued to rock the Downtown Mobile area throughout the night. The final explosion happened shortly after 2:00 am and the fire burned itself out a short time later.
