Council to Take Up $30k Skate Park Design Contract

MOBILE, Alabama -

The Mobile City Council is expected to vote Tuesday morning on a design contract for a new skate park.

Many skate fans in the city say it has been a long time coming, but the park comes with a hefty price tag. The design plans alone cost over $30,000 and construction of the park could be in the neighborhood of $400 thousand.

"We are lacking a skate park sure, but I think the more important point is that we are lacking enough open air outdoor free activities for our youth," said local skate shop owner Jewel Cullen who has been leading the push to get a skate park built.

Councilman John Williams says he wants to see the park built and thinks there are enough votes in the council to get it passed.

"First of all we are trying to make sure that it is something that is useful, second is easy to maintain. Another factor that goes into this engineering is that we are not designing something that unnecessarily ads risk to the park," said Williams.

"If it's reasonable, I'm all for it.  But, I have to look at this from a business standpoint. What's best for Mobile and what will bring in more visitors," said Council President Reggie Copeland Sr.

If approved the mayor says he would like to see construction start by the end of the year.
