One part of President Obama's budget proposal calls for improvements in Mobile. Alabama Senator Richard Shelby requested $6000,000 to widen the Port of Mobile.
Mobile is home to the 12th largest port in the U.S. but local leaders say a deeper and wider channel is needed to accommodate bigger ships.
Senator Shelby said, "This is a huge step toward realizing the Port of Mobile's true potential as an economic engine and job creator for Alabama and the region. We have much more work to do, but this will remain a top priority for me. We can make Mobile one of the top five ports in the nation."
