A tough crowd greeted Mobile County sheriff Sam Cochran Monday night at a town hall meeting.
The sheriff was there to talk about why he is against Senate Bill 286, which would restrict sheriffs' discretion to deny gun permits.
He says he is concerned about public safety if the bill is passed.
"It's going to free up the ability for people to just carry guns everywhere and we just don't need that. We need them to be permitted to carry their weapons concealed," said Cochran.
Many gun rights advocates in attendance said the sheriff's stance restricted Second Amendment rights.
The National Rifle Association has come out in support of Senate Bill 286. However 67 sheriffs in the state say they are against it.
