Peter Albrecht

Peter Albrecht is thrilled to be back at WKRG-TV! He brings nearly twenty years of covering the Gulf Coast to the News 5 team. Peter anchors News 5 at 5pm and also reports as part of the News 5 Investigates team.


Peter previously served as a news and sports anchor and reporter at WKRG-TV from 1990-2000. During that time he covered city hall and the state legislature and helped launch WKRG's 5pm newscast.

From 2000-2007, Peter was the managing editor and main news anchor at the NBC affiliate in Mobile.


Over the years, Peter has received dozens of awards from the Associated Press, the Mobile Press Club, the Press Club of Pensacola, the U.S. Department of Defense, Mobile Bay Monthly, and Lagniappe.


Peter began his career as a television journalist at WKBT-TV in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He has also worked at WFTC-TV in St. Paul/Minneapolis, Minnesota.


Prior to his return to WKRG in January, 2013, Albrecht was the Director of Marketing & Economic Development for Mobile County. In that role, he was involved promoting local tourism and in the effort to recruit Airbus and other industries to Mobile.


Active in the community, Peter has served on the boards for the following organizations: Mobile Sports Hall of Fame, Mobile Sports Authority, Economic Development Authority of Mobile, Baldwin, Washington, Escambia, and Clarke Counties, the Mobile Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau Marketing Committee, the Junior League of Mobile's Advisory Board, Matthews Park Athletic Association, Mobile National Babe Ruth (Trimmier Park), Mobile National Little League (Maitre Park), St. Paul's Episcopal School Parent Council, Ashland Place Pre-School Parent Council. Peter has also volunteered his time to several local charities.


Peter is a native of St. Paul, Minnesota. He has a bachelor's degree in history from Carleton College and a master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.


Peter and his wife, Julie, live in Midtown Mobile with their three children. An avid sports fan, Peter enjoys playing baseball in Mobile's men's league and closely following the exploits of the Minnesota Vikings. He's a member of one of the oldest documented fantasy football leagues in the nation – now in its 37th year!
