Jonathan Owens

Meteorologist at WKRG

Jonathan Owens

Jonathan Owens is a meteorologist/science and nature reporter at WKRG. His career has already taken him to 4 states and the Mexico border. He landed at WKRG in December 2010.

The natural beauty and diverse weather patterns of the Cumberland Mountains started his interest in the weather and natural world. Jonathan hosted a National Weather Service station that was located at his home in Virginia from 1993-2001.

He later became the Morning and Noon Meteorologist in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for 6 years where he learned to speak Spanish. While there, Jonathan was part of an Emmy award-winning morning newscast in 2007, which received a second Emmy nomination in 2009. He picked up his Seal of Approval from both the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and National Weather Association (NWA) around that time, too.

Before that, Jonathan worked in Greenville, Mississippi at ABC 6 News for 2 years. He has also worked at Baron Services in Huntsville, Alabama as a Doppler Radar Technician. Jonathan studied Geosciences and Broadcast Meteorology, and has a Bachelor of Science degree from the on-campus program at Mississippi State University.

When he's not tracking the weather, Jonathan enjoys a wide variety of interests, from astronomy to wine tasting, to collecting music from around the world, cooking, aviation, sports cars, and traveling to new, unusual places to learn about other cultures.
