FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist is calling on Florida Democrats to get out and vote in November as he seeks his old job back under his latest party affiliation. Crist easily defeated former Democratic Sen. Nan Rich in a primary on Tuesday and now will face Republican Gov. Rick Scott in the fall.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A state appeals court panel is asking the Florida Supreme Court to decide whether the state's ban on gay marriage is constitutional, calling it a matter of "great public importance." Florida voters approved the ban in 2008 but judges in four counties have overturned it.

MIAMI (AP) - A woman from greater Miami is pleading for the release of a journalist son held hostage in the Middle East and recently threatened with death by Islamic militants. Shirley Sotloff addressed the leader of the Islamic State in a televised video, pleading for the return of her 31-year-old son, Steven Sotloff.

MIAMI (AP) - A South Florida man is facing murder charges after the fatal shooting of a wheelchair-bound man begging for change along a busy roadway. Miami-Dade County police say Rodney Louis shot the victim multiple times Tuesday along on Interstate 95 ramp and fled in a car that later crashed under police pursuit.
