Spanish Fort HS Coach Creating Future Basketball Stars

SPANISH FORT, Ala. - "It's like herding cats at times, but it's great. We have a great group of young kids. They're learning the game of basketball and I think they're having fun," said Spanish Fort Warriors coach Ashley Harris.

Morning basketball games with his son are a bit different for Spanish Fort High School basketball coach Dru Powell. Instead of walking the sidelines at Spanish Fort High School, he's helping coach his son's youth basketball team.

"I get to sit down for these, I get to relax a little bit more during these games. But it's a lot of fun watching the guys play and compete," said Powell

"We've had some fun moments this year. My son picked up three fouls in three minutes in the last game. There's a lot of traveling and carrying and things like that but it's been fun it's a great time," said Harris.

Powell is helping coach his son, but he's also helping develop the next generation of Spanish Fort basketball stars.

"You know it only started a few years ago for basketball, and there's almost 300 kids playing in the youth league," said Powell. "I think that's really going to help our high school program down the road. I'm excited to see the growth and development of the league"
