High School Athlete of the Week - Kenya McQuirter of McGill-Toolen

MOBILE, Ala. - “The ball is coming to you, do something, get a kill. And you can see her teammates love her, they have cheers for her," said McGill-Toolen volleyball coach Kate Wood.

No moment has been too big for McGill volleyball star Kenya McQuirter, and it’s earned her national praise.

She was recently named the Gatorade Alabama Volleyball Player of the Year.

“It’s been surreal, it still hasn't sunk in for me for me yet. When I look at it, it’s a really big accomplishment," said McQuirter.

“She’s not really talkative, as people watch her, you don’t see a ton of emotion. We say her game is really big, but her personality is really quiet," said Wood.

And when I said no moment was too big for McQuirter, how about match point in the state championship game?

“It’s almost like it was a movie made for it," said Wood.

“I actually wasn’t nervous at all during the whole game. When coach told me I thought - Okay go out there and hit the ball," said McQuirter. "When I hit it, I actually thought it was blocked at first. But then I turned around and saw all my teammates jumping up and down and that’s when I realized we finally got the point.”

McQuirter helping cement a state title for the Yellow Jackets.

She’s only a junior, but has already committed to play volleyball at Samford University.
