Athlete of the Week: McGill-Toolen's Chandler Best

MOBILE, Ala. - Our Greene and Phillips High School Athlete of the Week is Chandler Best.

He had a huge game on the mound and at the plate in last week’s win over Spanish Fort and is a big reason the Yellow Jackets are undefeated to start the year.

“Last year Chandler (Best) was 12-0 for us as a sophomore,” said McGill-Toolen baseball coach Tim Becker. “He’s one of those guys that has gotten there because he works hard.”

Chandler has carried that success over to this season.

In the season opener against Baker, Chandler struck out 10 batters. Last weekend against Spanish Fort in the BayBears Classic, Chandler struck out three Torros. When he’s on the mound, he’s calm, cool and collected.

“I’m a little more calm, I try to not get rattled by the opponents if we play better teams but I’m just trying to go out and do my best each night,” said Chandler.

We know Chandler is dominant on the mound with the ball in his hand, but he’s also been destroying baseballs at the plate this year.

“Right now he’s our leading hitter,” said Coach Becker. “He’s hitting .500, he does a great job in the two-hole.”

Chandler was 3 for 3 against Spanish Fort last weekend driving in 2 RBI’s. He says being a pitcher helps him in the batter’s box.

“Just knowing, from a pitchers mindset what may be coming, or not coming,” said Chandler.

Chandler is committed to play baseball at Southern Miss after his baseball career ends at McGill, for now he'll keep dominating for the Yellow Jackets.
