MOBILE, Ala. - This week we’re hanging out with another baseball team, this time across the bay at Bayside Academy. We’re hanging out with the Admirals to honor Will Gates. The senior pitcher threw a no-hitter last week against Satsuma.
“I was just so excited, ecstatic, I was just overjoyed,” said Will.
All the emotions you should have after you throw a no-hitter, even if your shortstop had to help you realize what you just accomplished.
“Actually I had no idea that I had a no hitter honestly,” said Will. “My shortstop was trying to tell me that I had a no-hitter when a runner got on second base because I walked him. It didn’t register in my mind until after the game.”
“It was a 3-0 game, I just wanted to win the game. Really I wasn’t thinking too much about it because I was calling the pitches so I had to get in the zone as well,” said Bayside coach Tommy Walker. “I’ve seen a lot of baseball and I’ve coached a lot of games, but I was excited for him. It was really his first time to show his skills this year.”
This is Will’s second year with Bayside’s baseball team, but it’s his first significant playing time.
You could say he’s making the most of his opportunity.
