Maisel graduated from Murphy in 1942 starring in both football and basketball. He then attended Alabama where he worked for the Crimson Tide Athletic Department and coached the freshman basketball team in 1949 and 1950. He returned to his alma mater as head coach, where in four years he guided the Panthers to a 91-14 record and a state 2-A title in his final season.
In 2000, Maisel was inducteed into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame. In February of last year, Alabama's Coleman Coliseum dedicated its lobby to Maisel, along with his wife of 60 years, Frieda Maisel.
