Gatorade and ESPN have selected Clint Moseley of Leroy High School as the 2008-09 Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior quarterback had passed for 3,442 yards, 33 touchdowns and four interceptions on 191-of-283 passing at the time of his selection. He had also rushed for 677 yards and 15 touchdowns on 109 carries, averaging 6.2 yards per rush.

Winner of back-to-back Class 2A state championships and the Most Valuable Player of the 2007 state title game, Moseley has led the Bears (14-0) into the 2A state final scheduled for Dec. 6, where they will face Sulligent High.

A two-time Class 2A First Team All-State baseball player, Moseley has maintained an A-minus average in the classroom. He has visited a local nursing home on a weekly basis and has volunteered at Leroy High’s summer baseball camp. He also has worked with his father, Dean, on a beautification project on the school campus.
“He just does a great job as a team leader,” said Danny Powell, Moseley’s football and baseball coach. “He makes great pre-reads and as the plays develop, he makes great reads on the line. He does a good job deciding when to pull it down and run and when to buy some time. That’s where we get some of our big plays.”

Moseley joins recent Gatorade Alabama Football Players of the Year Julio Jones (2007-08, Foley HS), Phelon Jones (2006-07, McGill-Toolen HS), and Chris Smelley (2005-06, American Christian Academy) among the state’s list of former award winners.

Moseley is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award which will be announced later this month.
