IRVINGTON, Alabama - Ronnie Cottrell tells News 5 Sports he was "released" this morning as Bryant High school football Coach and Athletic Director.

Cottrell said he, "didn't see the change coming and was extremely surprised the school was going in another direction." A call to Bryant Principal Doug Estelle hasn't been returned this afternoon.

This was Cottrell's second season as Bryant's head coach. The Hurricanes finished the 2009 season with a 3-7 record.

Cottrell said he enjoyed his 17 months at the south Mobile county school, calling it, "a great place to live and tough place to coach." He said he hopes to find another coaching job in the Mobile area.

Sixteen of the 18 seniors on last year's team signed college football scholarships.

Cottrell is a former assistant coach at Alabama. He said this was the first time he'd ever been fired as a head coach. He was let go as an assistant when Mike Dubose was fired at Alabama.

Ronnie Cottrell should sell used cars somewhere…hes always been full of it.

I know for a fact that there has always been water breaks, at least the practices that I watched back then had them!  Players get over heated!  That is part of the game, it happens!  As far as the coach trying to get the player to continue, I saw the whole thing!  I was there that day!  It was blown out of the water and unless you were there to you do not need to keep talking about it!  A lot was said about that incedent, and he was not let go because of what supposably happened!  He stepped down and continues helping the football program still today!  Churches have been feeding the boys for years around there!  Someone told me that Murray and Horne were still down there helping out nad now Miller is back down there too!  He also said the website is http://www.almabryantfootball.com Is caneradio another site?  Hope all goes well in Cane Land and Lets Go Canes!

The football web site is http://WWW.CANERADIO.com.  I am not sure if it is being updated though.

The1-n-only I never said that I would not support the new coaches.  He may be great, but if he does not win or if he makes the wrong people mad then they will get rid of him to before he has time to do anything.  Do you not remember the coaches we had before these?  Do you remember several boys taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion?  Do you remember one that was fired for dragging a player on the field telling him that he can go one more?  This player was overheateed….Thats what I was talking about when I said water breaks.  One more thing, the local churches in this area have been cooking and feeding the football team, so no it was not them getting fed causing money problems.  I hope that we get to keep Donald, Murray, Miller and Horn.  I guess that will be up to the new coach.  I just know from experience that sometimes you need to think before wishing for a change, you may get worst than what you had.

I will try that!  Thanks!  Never really looked at the penalty thing, huh!  Oh well, he is FINALLY GONE!

1-n-only, apparently you have a clue.  If there is no discipline, the program can’t succeed.  Look at the Cane’s overall penalty yardage assesses against them…so much for discipline.  If players respect coaches, what you mentioned should not even be brought into question. Apparently, that was not happening, if what you say is true.  Have you tried the school’s site and linking to football?  Is there going to be a banquet?  I am curious to see how that is handled.

Bamabound please take your child to another school and move out of the area if you are not going to support the new staff.  Respect other coaches?  He let players threaten to hit other coaches and cuss them out and NEVER did anything to them!  I am sure the next staff will have the best interest of the players just like the prior staffs have!  I am not sure where you are going with the water break thing!  As far as the grades and sportsmanship thing, as far as I know every staff at Bryant has kept up with these things!  I have not seen one staff that has been at Bryant that has not cared for all the players, all-star or not!  There must of been a lot of questions about Cottrell over his reign or they would not of fired him!  Cottrell will find another job soon, I am sure!  You need to go outside your little circle and talk to people about him.  Maybe then you can get an honest oppinion of the man!  I am telling you he talks a good game, but in the end it is like every school he has been to.  Do you not see a trend here with him?  I heard also that he was the only one fired!  So, who do think should remain from the coaches left at the school?  Someone said that we still have a football website, anyone know the url?  I know you are mad that the man is gone, but he is not coming back!  So get over it!  I am not sure about the shoes and feeding the kids, but I will ask this weekend!  Maybe one reason they are so in debt now!!  Well….........  I will be waiting!

Well since you know so much about what is going on over there, who is the new coach?  Is he honest?  Will he have the boys best interest at heart?  Will he give them water breaks when needed?  Will he teach them good sportsmanship?  Respect other players and coaches? Keep up with their grades?  Give them a hard time when those grades drop?  Will he care for every player on that field or just the all-star players?  See there were no questions about Cottrell and the whole coaching staff for the last 17 months…..We knew our boys were okay and their best interest was important to all of them.  I do want the best for BHS and really those coaches may have done something wrong that we don’t know about, but we knew our boys were safe…..That is the only thing we are worried about. I believe the boys are the most important thing.

sorry but i do have grown kids and i do know what you are talking about.  i wish c the best….and whats best for bryant hs.  i believe we all agree it’s great and we all want it to be better.

Thanks mcpssteach I am so glad that someone else out there feels the same way I do.  I really hope he gets another job, the students there will really be blessed.  I am sure that I know who omg is and he does not have children so he has no clue what you and I are talking about.
