Hundreds gathered Saturday in Fairhope to remember Steve Dorsey, who was killed in a traffic accident Friday night near Orange Beach. Dorsey was a Senior at Fairhope High School and a member of the Pirate football team. Fairhope High head football coach Mark Lasseter summed it up everyone's feelings by saying "It's a tragic, tragic weekend."
The following is a press release from Alabama State Troopers providing details of the accident:
ORANGE BEACH, AL — A single-vehicle crash Friday evening claimed the life of a Baldwin County man and left two others hospitalized. Joseph Stephen Dorsey II, 18, of Fairhope, was driving north on the Foley Beach Express when, for unknown reasons, he drove onto the right shoulder of the roadway. Dorsey over-corrected and crossed over the southbound lanes before the vehicle overturned and came to rest. Neither Dorsey nor a passenger, Justin D. Bunch, 17, of Fairhope were wearing seatbelts and were both ejected from the 1999 Ford Explorer. An 18 year old passenger, Gregory M. Cunningham, also of Fairhope, was wearing a seatbelt and was not ejected. Bunch and Cunningham were transported to South Baldwin Hospital for treatment and Dorsey was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:30 p.m. crash. Speed was apparently a factor in the crash; alcohol involvement is not suspected.
