The Heisman hype is making its way to Baldwin county where friends and fans of a former Daphne quarterback are hoping their hometown favorite snags college football's biggest prize.Pat White, who now plays for West Virginia University, is one of twenty candidates in ESPN's Heisman Watch web poll, which puts him in contention for an official vote cast by Heisman sponsor Nissan.
"He's had a great season. He's working very hard," said Coley White, current Daphne quarterback and brother of Pat White.
Former teachers of the football standout started an email campaing encouraging people to vote for White in the poll. One teacher, who is also White's aunt, says she's already sent a mass email to more than one hundred people.
"I have been forwarding it all day long," said Drexel Lang. "Everytime I'm not doing something else, I'm voting for Pat," she said.
"I voted once this morning and I'll go back when I get a little time and I'll vote a few times," says Joe Hutchins, Daphne's baseball coach, who also coached White.
White is credited by many with turning WVU's football program around. The mountaineers are ranked #2 in the BCS standings and are in the running to play for the national championship.
"Everybody's proud of him," says Daphne head football coach Glen Vickery. "He's a great guy to represent this school and this community," said Vickery.
As of Wednesday afternoon, White ranked 8th in the ESPN Heisman poll with more than 11,000 votes. You can vote by clicking on "ESPN Heisman Poll" under external links.
