Decatur, Alabama - A north Alabama man who fled into a frigid creek while trying to escape police during a traffic stop was found dead in what authorities say was an apparent drowning.

Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett said 43-year-old Gary Wayne Brown of Lacey's Spring got out of his vehicle and ran into a creek after being pursued for suspected drunken driving early Sunday. It was about 20 degrees at the time.

Searchers located Brown's body Sunday afternoon. He's believed to have drowned.

The Decatur Daily reports that Brown's son, 20-year-old Justin Brown, was in the vehicle with his father and allegedly fled from authorities by jumping off a bridge into the same creek. He survived but suffered from severe hypothermia.
