On Day 19 of Putting It In Park, we ride in a Lincoln Navigator Super Stretch! This thing makes a limousine look small.

Modern Limousine Company offered to let us ride in one of their luxury vehicles our last day.

The Lincoln Navigator is the ultimate in gas guzzling. It seats 16 people and gets seven miles a gallon. It takes an entire gallon to get us to Channel 5.

Modern Limousine owner Don Gomien gave us the free ride but we did tip 25 dollars. Otherwise, this trip would have cost more than 200 bucks.

We took a look back at all 19 ideas that we did in July and realized that "putting it in park" is something most people can't do.

On average, I spend 240 dollars a month on gas. For this experiment, I paid bus fare, cab fare, airport shuttle costs and we tipped our Navigator driver.

-25.00 cab fare
-25.00 limo tip
-18.00 airport shuttle
- 3.85 bus fare for 3 rides

If you subtract all of that from 240, it means I saved 168.15 this month.

It's hard to calculate favors, ride mooching and kindness to get anything exact but all the effort doesn't seem worth what I saved!

Of all the ideas I tried, carpooling is the only one that really works for me. I don't get off work early enough to take the bus home and riding my bike is not something I'm comfortable doing! I'm also not buying a segway, Smart car or motorcycle anytime soon!

I can't begin to thank all of the people who helped make this series a success. Without the kindness and generosity of people in South Alabama, we would have been stranded for days!

I'd also like to say a special THANKS to Arnell (BMOC) Hamilton. He's an incredibly talented photojournalist and went beyond the call of duty to make this project work.

Our corner store was a corner store sitting on a hill.  A brick retaining wall ran along two sides of the place.  Some of us kids would be sitting on that wall when the RC truck came, because we had his schedule down.  He would always hand out a couple of drinks to us kids. lol

That old store had a bread box out front because the bread man would run so early in the morning.  The owner would put any bread she did not sell in that box and the bread man would collect it and leave the fresh stuff.  Strictly the honor system back in those days.

Dose any one here remember the rolling stores and sitting out on the wooden steps in front of the old country store and drinking an RC cola. Never had a need to go anywhere else to need a vehicle for 99% of the time. I’ve been waiting for the Internet to take the place of the rolling store but it hasn’t happened yet but It’s getting close.

Yep, time’s have sure changed since you or I were kids…It’s a shame really.

LOL - I guess it was a lot like Mayberry! And, not a bad life for a kid.  A whole bunch of us neighborhood kids would gather up each morning about daybreak and we would only go back home for food.  No one worried about us as long as we got home before dark.  Those days sure are long gone….

BamaBob grew up in Mayberry!  Haha!!  How’s Aunt Bee doing??

Just kidding BamaBob.

Ya know, I grew up in a small town in south Mississippi, during a time when corner stores were still the mainstay of a community.  We could easily walk to the store and get the staples of life any time something was needed.  A few blocks further away was a meat market and they had a delivery guy that rode an old bike with a huge basket on the front and two smaller ones one the rear.  He made deliveries all over that town.  We also had milk delivered to our doorstep twice a week.  The mail was even brought to the front door and the postman would hang around long enough to spread all the latest gossip. lol

In that time and location a person could get along without a car, but that just doesn’t seem realistic these days.  Maybe city planners should take a look at history and incorporate some of the better ideas, such as small towns within larger cities.

Good job Tiffany!

It ain’t easy to put it in park in a city like Mobile.  We are not that centralized and tend to stretch to all geographical boundaries.

It was great Tiffany, You and Arnell did a great job ! Getting out there and meeting the people and spreading the word on energy conservation has made a bigger impact on the area than you realize at this time. Hats off for both of you !!
