Clio of the late four-term Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace has been
ruled accidental.
Ragan Ingram, a spokesman for the state fire marshal, said
Tuesday investigators determined the fire started in the kitchen
and was caused by an electrical problem.
The Sunday night fire gutted the home, leaving only brick walls.
Built in 1925, the home was listed on the Alabama Register of
Landmarks and Heritage in 1975. The Wallace family sold the house
years ago, and fire marshals said it was vacant when the fire
occurred.

One of the things I remember about governor Wallace was he put a big temporary tax on automobile plates that is still with us today. We stopped in to see him one day while in Montgomery just out of curiosity and to see inside the capital building and there he was on the phone with his boots propped up on his desk. He didn’t have time to talk that day and normally he would say a few words to all visitors. Him standing in the door to the school was just show boating, when the federal marshalls asked him to step aside after his little speech, he did.
