BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A United Nations report says Alabama's
death penalty system is so flawed that the state may have executed
an innocent person, but the state's top prosecutor dismisses the
criticism.
A report by special investigator Philip Alston at the U.N.'s
Human Rights Council describes flaws in Alabama's system, alleging
that judges convert life sentences to death sentences for purely
political reasons and condemned inmates have inadequate legal
representation.
Alabama Attorney General Troy King accuses the U.N. of pushing
an ideological agenda. King says he doesn't believe judges impose
the death penalty for political reasons.

Okay I’ve read up some on Alabama Death Row policy and here’s what I think should be considered for change. 1) A person on death row should be provided an attorney if a judge concludes that new evidence is available that could change the sentence. 2) Alabama should ensure access to DNA testing in capital murder cases and should also require that evidence be preserved until the execution 3) The ability of a judge to override a jury’s death sentence should be abolished.—-  I say all this because it is our moral responsibility to get it right with capital punishment.  At the same time we have an obligation to carry out these sentences in a shorter amount of time with less taxpayer expense.  Fair but expedient should be the goal.

I’ve been asking questions trying to understand exactly what you’d like to see changed. Not all of us here are arguing.  I’d like to know what law you are referring to that doesn’t allow DNA evidence to be tested.

igotbanned83 , as with the case i pointed out to you 20 years plus, is not exactly a express lane to be executed. they have plenty of time to get their case overturned they do not have to pay for attorney fees. its not like they have to save up money to pay for legal fees.

If there are flaws in a case, one shouldnt be executed until all avenues have been exhausted. If their are credible witnesses, let them come forward. If there is DNA evidence that could almost certainly exonnerate someone, let it be tested. Alabamas Death Penalty laws do not let this evidence be tested. You all are arguing with me about the wrong point. You dont understand the laws so quit arguing with me about them. Not one of you has bothered to ask me which laws I believe need to be abolished. Am I against the Death Penalty? No.

igotbanned83 , no you should not waste your time.
i would suggest you go to each victims family and get an impact statement, then go look at pictures of the crime scene. then look at how long these killers have been waiting and every day taking a breath their victims no longer take. they were convicted by a jury. note the date between conviction and execution plenty of time to prove innocence. then be sure and write a letter to the un telling them to clean out their own closets, before they come down here and start sling mud.>>>>>>>>>With the United Nations already under fire for the Oil-for-Food mega-scandal and other corruption, sensational allegations of rampant sexual exploitation and rape of young girls and women by the U.N.‘s so-called “peacekeepers” and civilian staffers in the Congo is dragging the global body’s reputation to an all-time low.

Opinionwriter, i am really sorry about your mother.

Asda, I watched my mother be gunned down and her killer is free today after serving a “life sentence” of 20 years.  But in the end I trust God will sort all of this out anyway.  I’ll leave it up to Him.

Are you are advocating that certain cases be allowed court appointed attorneys for appeals and other not?  Just want to make sure I understand you correctly.  If the jury could make that decision at the trial based on the evidence then maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea.  That way the rock solid cases don’t waste all our tax dollars.

igotbanned83 screw you I have read it and I think some of what they are doning is great.  But most people on Death row deserve to be there.  I have lost a very close friend because he was murdered.  And you know what the guy that killed him got 15 years that is it.  I can not wait for him to get out then we are going to have a little talk about what he did.
