"It's my son Joseph's birthday and what a gift for all of us."Angie Swiger is the newest member of the Baldwin County School Board. "It's quite an honor to be elected by the people of District 5," she says.
As for incumbent Margaret Long, "I really appreciate the people that came out and supported me. I've enjoyed being on the board fo rhte last six years. I think Angie is going to do a good job. She will work hard and work for all the students in Baldwin County."
Both candidates spent the day at three precincts, in Foley, Magnolia Springs and Elberta. During the June third primary, the race had been left off the ballot. Voter turnout was more important than ever. "A little over two thousand could have shown up to vote," says Probate Judge Adrian Johns, "Looks like far less than that will."
Voter turnout was estimated at five percent but it was enough for Swiger to win her first political race ever. Now, she says, the real work begins. "I'd like to visit all the schools in Baldwin County. I'd like to see where our schools in our district stand compared to all the other schools. Also I would like to assess where we are in our academic programs and I'd like to get rid of some of those portables. I'd like to do whatever I can to start working on that immediately."
Swiger will take office in November.
