(CBS) On Monday's "Late Show with David Letterman," the comedian came out swinging, saying, "One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game. During the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez!"

It turned out that many people took offense at the joke, especially the Alaska governor and former GOP vice presidential candidate and her family.

In a statement, she said, "Laughter incited by sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is .. disgusting."

On Wednesday, Letterman tried to quiet the controversy, joking, "I am hardly a celebrity. I am 62, yes!"

He insisted the joke was targeted at 18-year-old Bristol Palin, a single mother, and not 14-year-old Willow Palin, who was the Palin daughter at the ballgame.

"These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter," Letterman stressed. "I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl."

Aside from that remark, Letterman was unapologetic about having fun at Palin's expense.

left vs right dont forget it was the hero of the right limaugh who referred to chelsea clinton as first dog. the joke was funny, and topical, and aimed at bristol, not the 14 year old. its bristol who has made a public figure out of herself by her actions, both pre, during, and post pregnancy. the other children have managed to stay out of the limelight, the bush twins, cheeneys daughter, most of the bush children, regans children sought the spotlight, posed in playboy, hosted saturday night live. no, palin is just grabbing publicity. as lettermans ratings and salary go up up up.

I agree the comment was wrong no matter which daughter or whose daughter he was talking about. You should always put yourself in the other person’s shoes before making a comment as ignorant as that one. I mean sure I could shake off whatever someone was saying about me, no problem. However, bring my daughter into it then we are going to have problems. I know that every parent can relate.

letterman is old so i would not hit him but open hand slip the taste out of his beak if he said that about my kids. i would sue CBS for there programing it to air. it was there writers and producers that let it air.

It doesn’t matter which daughter he was talking about-or whose daughter, for that matter-it was tasteless. A-Rod and young girls? This from someone whose popping MADONNA, that 60 something woman?lol

How would the media react if the comment had been about Obama’s daughters? Isn’t “something” being kept really quiet regarding Joe Bidens daughter? Letterman would have already been fired had he made this comment about anyone on the left’s child, or a non-white persons child. That is the REALITY.
