The Mobile County Personnel Board is expected to make a decision Thursday morning on changing overtime pay for city workers.
Police officers and firefighters would be among the workers affected.
Mobile Mayor Sam Jones is asking the personnel board to change overtime rules.
The mayor said under his proposal, the city would be able to save enough money to raise salary levels overall.
Jones said, "It is what we have to do to be competitive as a city. It is what we have to do to provide for the 2500 employees at the city of Mobile."
Right now, for example, if a city employee takes a vacation day on a Monday, and works nine hours each day Tuesday through Friday later that week, the employee would be paid four hours overtime at time and a half.
Under the mayor's proposal, employees would only get the overtime pay if they work more than forty hours a week.
Associations that represent police and firefighters think the change is a bad idea.
Donald Scott with the Alabama Police Benevolent Association said, "If they (police officers) take a day off, they're going to be penalized, either as far as a sick child, having to go to the hospital or the doctor, or for an emergency at the school."
John Wiggins with Mobile Firefighters Local 1349 said, "When you work under a system for four decades and its done one way and you change it, and it hurts a guy's billfold, then we constitute that as losing a benefit. That's the only way we can look at it."
The meeting starts at 8:30 am at board offices at 1809 Government Street.

Well, Birmingham and the whole state of Utah is giving it a try.  I think their motivation is to save on fuel costs, which makes since if it is truly a 4-day week.

BamaBob-I am under the impression this 4 day work week proposal is for non-puplic contact departments. Maintenance probably accounts for the majority of the proposed 4 day work week jobs. This whole 4 day work week thing may be one of the reasons why the city is changing this overtime pay policy. By doing this Police and Fire might be able to get in on that 4 day work week too.

A 4-day work week works for a lot of folks, but I just don’t see it as an energy saver unless all but emergency services shut down on the same day.  If all the city vehilces spent another day at the car pool, that alone would probably save a lot of fuel cost.

working4u - no the extra 2 hours a day is not considered overtime.  As far as I know, the police and fire departments are the only ones who have that benefit.  If we take off a day we have to turn in 10 hours of sick/vac time.

I think the idea about monitoring the use of city vechiles is a great idea.  I have seen plain clothes people driving them with kids in the back all the time.  The only people I think should get to keep the cars are the detectives that are on call.

The car thing bothers me too.  Especially, when I see a blue MU tag go speeding by me on the interstate and straight past the city limits.

But, it is only fair to mention that the city has facilities that require the attention of various city workers located all over this town. So, it shouldn’t be strange to see city vehicles all over town.  That is part of the job for many.

Taking care of personal business with a city or county vehicle during off ours is what should be questioned.

BamaBob - I agree with you, there would be no reason in the entire city going to a 4 day work week to “save the city money” if they didnt completely close down one day.  In our department, we changed over to a 4 day week for our own conviences, such as one less day of day care for our children, yes saving one day of gas, and having a free day to run errands or go to dr’s appointments without using our sick/vac time.
Our department is so small, and we do not deal with the public, so this schedule has worked out for us.

Taxdollarsatwork-I am all for making it easier for employees to afford this cost of living shock.
Fuel is just killing the working folks like us. If a job can be done right on a four day work week
so be it. When you folks do that 4 day work week, is the 2 hours over each day considered overtime? Or do you get paid for a straight regular 40 hours (4 x 10 hours a day)?

If all the city buildings remain open and occupied 5 days a week, what is to be gained by going to a 4-day work week?  Those that are normally sitting in offices will now be out driving all over town taking care of personal business and the city facilities will still be at full operational capacity as far as lighting and HVAC for even longer periods of time.  The city will have done nothing to reduce energy consumption given that scenario.

I agree with all of you. my petpeve is driving the vehicles home (you see them all over town and there not at work) the law says you work 40 hours and after that it is overtime!  what makes them so different than everybody else.  Our tax dollars at work…!
