unscheduled landing in St. Louis.
Passengers felt the plane dip briefly, causing a stomach-rolling
sensation as if being on a roller coaster. But the unexpected
movement did not cause visible alarm for the frequent fliers on the
plane.
The pilot announced from the cockpit that there was a problem
maintaining the proper pitch -- that's keeping the nose of the
plane at the proper angle -- as the MD-80 Midwest charter was
taking off from Chicago for Charlotte, North Carolina.
Obama, his staff, the Secret Service entourage and the press sat
on the plane as it was being checked out on the ground. Smiling and
joking with reporters, the Democratic presidential candidate told
them, "I just thought we'd spice things up a little bit today."
